Our objective is to answer questions which primarily deal with the innate immune system and its involvement in the pathology of chronic airway diseases such as bronchial asthma. Using the model system Drosophila melanogaster we mainly focus on immune functions of airway epithelial cells and macrophages, two cell types, which in humans are mainly involved in the development, progression, and exacerbation of chronic lung diseases and are therefore ideal targets for therapeutic interventions.
