We are the lung research center of the Leibniz Association.
Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).

Building the world's evidence base to tackle drug-resistant tuberculosis

A new international programme, RESPECT-TB, coordinated by the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford in collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand South Africa and Queen Mary University of London, will unite researchers and national tuberculosis programmes across five high-burden countries to build one of the world's richest evidence resources on drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB).

Once infected, men and women have the same risk of developing active tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, primarily affecting the lungs. Typical symptoms of tuberculosis include coughing, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Tuberculosis bacteria are usually transmitted through the air when infected individuals cough, and contact persons inhale the bacteria-containing air. The risk of infection is particularly high in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces.
