Equality Opportunities & Social Affairs

The FZB actively promotes diversity and equal opportunities at the RCB/FZB and is committed to implementing and further developing the compatibility of career, family and life phases in science and research. The FZB has a family-friendly centre culture and integrates the work on diversity and equal opportunities into the strategic development of the institute.

The implementation of the FZB's current Gender Equality Plan serves as an indicator for sustainable, innovative and goal-oriented measures for gender equality in the workplace. Our gender equality measures fulfil the requirements of the Gender Equality Plan (GEP) for application and participation in Horizon Europe. The FZB is also certified as part of the HR Excellence Award for working conditions for scientists and by berufundfamilie GmbH for family-friendly measures at the FZB.

The FZB has also signed the Diversity Charter. We are currently developing an overarching diversity strategy for the centre.

The FZB's Equal Opportunities and Diversity Officers advise and support FZB employees with questions and problems in the following areas, among others:

  • Compatibility of family and career
  • Gender equality
  • Gender-equitable and non-discriminatory application process
  • Career planning, development and further training (e.g. mentoring programme)

The duties of the Equal Opportunities Officer are regulated in the GWK's Equal Opportunities Implementation Agreement. A complaints office has been set up at the Research Centre Borstel in accordance with the General Equal Treatment Act to prevent any disadvantage or discrimination in the workplace or, if it has already occurred, to remedy it.

In addition, the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Officers work hand in hand with the Social Affairs Department to support and advise employees on matters of trust, such as:

  • Information event for new employees
  • Conflicts and bullying
  • Sexual harassment, disadvantage and discrimination under the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG)

The Research Center Borstel (FZB) actively advocates for a work and family audit to improve the compatibility of work and family.

For us, family is wherever people take care of each other and assume social responsibility (e.g. care and nursing) not only for immediate relatives, spouses, biological children and parents, but also for non-marital or same-sex partners, as well for non-biological children.

We want to ensure that women and men are involved in integrating the gender and family perspective in all work disciplines and that the center's financial resources are used to promote equality.

We have been doing a lot for this for many years, here is a small selection:

We

  • take care of new employees through good training and an information event for “Neuborsteler”
  • train our managers regularly
  • conduct regular employee discussions to improve cooperation on an equal footing
  • Whenever possible, offer flexible working hours, home office and working time arrangements based on life phases
  • live and develop our culture of values
  • run a small campus daycare center for children up to 3 years old
  • promote the health of our employees, offer an internal company medical service, co-finance various health measures, and offer the Jobrad model
  • advise and support employees on psychological stress, care issues and general social challenges in different phases of life

The FZB has been awarded the “audit berufundfamilie” certificate since 2010.
