Single-cell omics has gained significant momentum. This has been driven by the development of pioneering mass spectrometers with the sensitivity and resolution required to enable these insights, all coupled with the speed needed for this ever-growing area of research. This progress is demonstrated by rapid, high-throughput approaches to cell sorting and characterization, alongside comprehensive profiling at the single-cell level. It is further complemented with the push towards higher spatial resolution forcellular imaging, using the low-flow, high-spatial-resolution imaging of desorption electrospray ionization with the DESI XS ionsource. This source achieves pixel sizes of 5 μmat acquisition rates of >100 Hz, with high confidence in feature identification.
