And the winner is...

... Dr. Olha Shchudro. In the winter semester 2024/2025, an international group of pulmonologists conducted an online lecture series on Respiratory Medicine for colleagues in Ukraine in cooperation with the V.N. Karazin University in Kharkiv. Every Friday at 15:00 local time for 17 weeks, a topic area of Respiratory Medicine was covered for one hour via video conference. The lecture slides were translated into Ukrainian in advance and the lectures themselves were held in English. The two former presidents of the European Respiratory Society, Sir Professor Peter Barnes from England and Professor Marc Humbert from France, were among those taking part.

The lecture series concluded last week with a ‘Pneumojeopardy’ quiz with 25 questions of varying severity from the entire spectrum of Respiratory Medicine. Each question was scored according to its severity. Points were awarded for the first correct answers given. The prize for the most points collected, a new stethoscope, went to Dr. Olha Shchudro.

Dr. Shchudro comes from Dnipro in Ukraine. She was the quickest with the correct answers. The young doctor is particularly interested in the interaction between the lungs and heart. She would like to combine cardiology and pneumology and would like to work in the field of transplantation medicine in the future.

‘Dr. Shchudro was outstanding, but she is not the only winner. Everyone won in this lecture series, including the lecturers. We received wonderful feedback from Ukraine and were able to gain a small insight into how difficult it must be to maintain teaching at universities in the country under the current circumstances. We received support from many parties, including the journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, which publicised our lectures. Very special thanks go to Dr. Olha Konstantynovska, the local coordinator, Dr. Ivan Hrek, for the translations of the lectures and the technical support, and to Professor Tetiana Lyadova, Dean of V.N. Karazin University in Kharkiv, who kept the lectures going despite repeated power cuts and the constant threat of air raids. My respect goes to them and all Ukrainians,’ says Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director at the Research Center Borstel, who already planning the next lecture series on Immunology for the summer semester.
