Stool4TB celebrates breakthroughs in tuberculosis diagnostics
Stool4TB research consortium convened last week in Mbabane for its final annual meeting, celebrating a major milestone in its mission to revolutionize tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics. The event marked the successful completion of a multi-country study aimed at improving TB detection among children and people living with HIV using a non-invasive, stool-based qPCR test
The study, conducted in Eswatini, Uganda, and Mozambique, is part of the EDCTP2 Programme supported by the European Union, with additional backing from Global Health EDCTP3 and its member countries.
Opening the meeting, Ms. Rejoice Nkambule, Eswatini’s Deputy Director of Public Health, reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to innovation in TB care and public health. Participants reviewed the final results of the study and heard progress updates from PhD students Kasule George William (Uganda) and Edson Mambuque (Mozambique), demonstrating the project’s investment in local research leadership.
A hands-on workshop on statistical analysis using R helped strengthen local data science capabilities, while a site visit to Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Eswatini highlighted key partnerships in the field.
As the project concludes, the focus shifts to disseminating findings, informing policy, and paving the way for future implementation of stool-based diagnostics. With TB remaining a global health challenge, particularly in high-burden regions, stool4TB’s evidence-based approach presents a promising path forward.
Stool4TB unites institutions from Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, including Amsterdam UMC, ISGlobal, Baylor Eswatini, CISM Mozambique, Makerere University Uganda, and Research Center Borstel, Germany. “We are grateful to be part of this outstanding team that has produced important research findings to improve the diagnosis of those affected by TB, says Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director of the Research Center Borstel. His team is evaluating novel biomarkers as a partner in the stool4tb consortium.
