‘Tuberculosis research on the run": FZB Team at the ’Run between the seas’.

On Saturday, 24 May 2025, the Research Centre Borstel (FZB) once again took on the sporting challenge of the ‘Run between the Seas’. In the relay race from Husum on the North Sea to Damp on the Baltic Sea, the FZB team covered the 92.2-kilometre route in a total time of 7 hours, 53 minutes and 14 seconds - achieving an outstanding 124th place out of a total of 607 relay teams.

With great team spirit, speed and motivation, the nine runners mastered the challenging stages across Schleswig-Holstein under the team slogan ‘Tuberculosis research on the run’. The team included Thomas Theo Brehm, Bega Tulu Eticha, Christoph Lange, Lennard Meiwes, Collins Kidake Musia, Maja Reimann and Dariusz Wölk (all Clinical Infectious Diseases), Margo Diricks (Molecular & Experimental Mycobacteriology) and Matthias Merker (Evolution of the Resistome). One runner had cancelled at short notice due to illness, and Thomas Theo Brehm - coordinator of the Borstel team - decided at short notice to run two sections of the course, quasi a half marathon from a standing start.

The run not only stood for athletic motivation, but also for team cohesion across departments and nationalities - a true reflection of the daily cooperation at the Research Center Borstel. The day was characterised by movement, encounters and enthusiasm.

The team would like to thank the organisers for an all-round successful event and is already looking forward to next year - because after the run is before the run!
