DanGerouS Mycobacteria Club met in Malmö in 2026

More than 60 experts from Denmark, Germany, and Sweden met in Malmö in early January to discuss current developments in mycobacterial research at the DanGerouS Mycobacteria Club.

Until the 17th century, what is now Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany and Skåne in southern Sweden belonged together to the Kingdom of Denmark. Perhaps this is why there is still a special bond in the region. Doctors and scientists from Denmark (Dan), Germany (Ger), and Sweden (S) with an interest in diseases caused by mycobacteria meet regularly in January at the DanGerouS Mycobacteria Club to discuss current developments in their field and cultivate good neighborly relations. In 2025, the Club met in Borstel, and this year the meeting took place on January 23 in Malmö with more than 60 participants, including two “minibus loads” from northern Germany. Professor Per Björkman and Dr. Sten Skogmar from Lund University hosted the scientific symposium in the auditorium of the university hospital. In addition to exciting case reports involving difficult treatment situations, there were once again interesting overview presentations on current topics in mycobacteriology and reports on ongoing research projects.

“The events organized by the DanGerouS Mycobacteria Club are an integral part of our congress program,” says Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director at the Research Center Borstel, who founded the Club together with Professor Aase Bengaard Andersen from the University of Copenhagen. “This small symposium with our Nordic colleagues brightens up the dark season and always takes place in a special atmosphere. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have such nice neighbors.”
