International tuberculosis experts meet at the DZIF Clinical Tuberculosis Course 2026
From 24–26 June 2026, the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, welcomed an international audience of clinicians, public health professionals and researchers to the DZIF Course Clinical Tuberculosis 2026. Organized by the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), the three-day course provided participants with a comprehensive update on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), while showcasing the latest advances in clinical and translational research.
The programme brought together internationally recognized experts to learn about latest developments in TB epidemiology, innovative diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies for drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis, paediatric TB, antibiotic stewardship and the impact of migration on TB control. Interactive case presentations encouraged lively discussion and practical problem-solving, enabling participants to translate the latest scientific evidence into everyday clinical practice.
The international faculty of the 2026 DZIF Clinical Tuberculosis Course included prominent scientist like Dr. Clifton E. Barry from the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, the representative for tuberculosis in the WHO Europe Region, Dr. Askar Yedilbayev from Kazakhstan and Leibniz Chair Professor Anna-Mandalakas, from Baylor College in Houston, Texas, USA, among many other experts in the field.
A special highlight of this year's course was the participation of the 2026 Visiting Professor in Tuberculosis, Professor Tony Hu of Tsinghua University, China, one of the top ranking Universities globally. Professor Hu is a world leading expert on innovative tuberculosis diagnostics. He conducted a satellite symposium with on emerging diagnostic technologies and delivered a keynote lecture offering insights into latest developments for tuberculosis detection.
A delegation of five clinicians and scientists from Ukraine were participating with support from the German Ministry of Development/the Else-Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, covering the long distance from Kharkiv to Borstel by train and car.
"The fight against tuberculosis requires close collaboration between public health experts, clinicians and scientists and," says Anne Oleischeck, who coordinated the conference organization. "The DZIF Clinical Tuberculosis Course provides an important platform for knowledge exchange, interdisciplinary networking and the translation of research into improved patient care."

Hosted in the historic manor house of the Research Center Borstel, the course once again highlighted the institution's leading role in tuberculosis research and education. The location was again an ideal venue for the international symposium.
Participants left Borstel with updated knowledge, strengthened international collaborations and renewed commitment to improving tuberculosis prevention and care worldwide.
