Tashkent Summit: Accelerating Action Against TB and HIV in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan convened on September 29th-30th for a high-level regional workshop in Tashkent aimed at strengthening health responses to tuberculosis (TB) and HIV across Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA).

The two-day event gathers health officials, technical experts, civil society organizations, and international partners to bridge gaps in disease prevention, diagnosis, and care.   Countries across EECA continue to experience a heavy burden of HIV and TB, compounded by late diagnoses, advanced HIV disease, and drug-resistant strains. The joint workshop serves as a critical platform to translate updated WHO recommendations into operational national strategies. Key priorities include scaling up rapid molecular diagnostics, shorter drug-resistant TB treatment regimens (such as bedaquiline-pretomanid-linezolid-moxifloxacin (BPaLM), expanded pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including long-acting injectables, and person-centered models of care integrated into primary healthcare systems.

"Sharing practical lessons across borders is essential to overcome common implementation barriers, address funding challenges, and accelerate progress toward global End TB and AIDS targets," noted Professor Christoph Lange, Secretary General of the International Union and Lung Diseases, one of the delegates.   Featuring delegates from 12 EECA national health programs alongside representatives from UNAIDS, Unitaid, the Stop TB Partnership, and local civil society groups like TBnet, the forum concludes with national action plans and technical commitment roadmaps to ensure sustainable, equitable access to lifesaving innovations.
