Focus on the lungs
We are the lung research center of the Leibniz Association.
Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).

Chronic lung diseases
The program area is dedicated to research into asthma, COPD and allergies, as these are among the most common chronic diseases and therefore cause an enormous burden for both patients and healthcare systems.

Infections
The Infections program area is dedicated to researching and combating bacterial infectious diseases of the lung with a focus on tuberculosis.
The aim is to improve the control and treatment of this disease.

Science & Technology
This area combines overarching research units that are essential for research at the FZB and represent an important link between the subject areas.

     Neue Erkenntnisse zur Vielfalt der Darmmikrobiota

    Ein internationales Forscherteam stellt Zusammenhang zwischen Zellform und Funktion des Darmbewohners Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron her. Auch die übergreifende Forschungseinheit „Fluoreszenz-Zytometrie“ des Forschungszentrums Borstel, Leibniz Lungenzentrum, war an dieser Studie beteiligt und brachte ihre Expertise im Bereich der Zellanalyse und -sortierung ein.

    Sustainable Management of OMICS Data – Moving Forward Together in Research Data Management in Northern Germany

    On 5th June 2025, the Research Centre Borstel became a hub for OMICS expertise: from genomics to proteomics to lipidomics, more than 30 participants from Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Rostock, Gießen, Gent, and Heidelberg gathered to address the growing data volumes from modern sequencing technologies.
