The Next Step Towards Personalized Medicine: Medical Device Study on Computer-Assisted Personalized Therapy for COPD Launches at the FZB
With the enrollment of the first patient, the PerMed-COPD study has now officially started at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center.
The study evaluates a computer-assisted clinical decision support system (CDSS) designed to personalize therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In the nationwide COPD cohort COSYCONET, with contributions from the Clinical Trial Center at the Research Center Borstel, it was shown that not all COPD is the same: different disease types can be distinguished based on their comorbidities. For example, one subtype is primarily associated with cardiovascular comorbidities, while another is characterized mainly by psychological comorbidities.
Through a broad range of examinations, including lung function tests, ECG, bioimpedance measurements, and laboratory analyses, patients can be classified into a disease subtype using the computer system, allowing for personalized treatment. The primary goal is to improve patients’ quality of life. The study is coordinated by Philipps University Marburg. PD Dr. Barbara Kalsdorf is the local principal investigator at the Clinical Trial Center.
“We especially appreciate that the study mainly focuses on participant satisfaction and quality of life,” reports Dr. Niklas Köhler, who co-coordinates the study at the Clinical Trial Center. “This focus is also very well received by the patients.”
PerMed-COPD is an interventional study conducted under the German Medical Devices Act. It is randomized at the level of the participating trial centers; the Clinical Trial Center at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, is part of the intervention group. The study is designed to run for several years, with 15–20 patients expected to be enrolled in Borstel.
Individuals with COPD who are interested in participating can contact the Clinical Trial Center using the details below:
