Together with members of the Stormarn and Bargteheide Rotary Clubs, the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, is regularly organizing aid deliveries for the tuberculosis hospital in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. Together with international colleagues, Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director at the Research Center Borstel, launched a lecture series on Infectious Diseases and offered it as a weekly online event in the summer semester of 2024 together with the V.N. Karazin University in Kharkiv. More than 200 students, doctors and scientists took part in some of the lectures. At the end of the summer semester, there was agreement on a need to continue in the winter semester. At the request of V.N. Karazin University, the topic of the winter semester 2024/2025 will be “Respiratory Medicine”.

Renowned pulmonologists such as Professor Sir Peter Barnes from London and Professor Marc Humbert from Paris, both former presidents of the European Respiratory Society, spontaneously agreed to take part. The 17-part lecture series “Respiratory Medicine” brings together some of the best-known clinical scientists in the field of Respiratory Medicine from Europe. With the exception of the Christmas period, a lecture from the field of Respiratory Medicine will take place every Friday at 15:00 Eastern European Time (14:00 German time) from October 18, 2024 to February 28, 2025. The topics range from key diseases such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis and sleep-related breathing disorders to diagnostic methods for measuring lung function and bronchoscopy. The target group are medical students and doctors in further training from all over Ukraine. The presentations will be translated into Ukrainian beforehand so that non-English-speaking listeners can also take part.
