Another ECDC training successfully finished

International specialists deepened their knowledge of genome data analysis of tuberculosis pathogens in a one-week training course at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center.

In September, colleagues from Ireland, Lithuania, Albania, Bosnia, and Montenegro visited the FZB to participate in a one-week training course as part of the GenEpi BioTrain initiative. The aim of the course was to improve existing bioinformatics knowledge and apply it to the analysis of whole genome sequencing (WGS) data from the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). The course was aimed at professionals working in public health institutions who analyze genomic data for public health surveillance purposes.

The training provided participants with a detailed understanding of next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods and the genomics of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. In addition, the focus was on the application and further development of bioinformatics tools and analysis pipelines to jointly evaluate and visualize sequence and epidemiological data. Another focus was on interpreting the results with regard to resistance and transmission routes. Finally, participants learned how to prepare their analyses in a suitable form for internal and external reports.

The GenEpi BioTrain initiative is an interdisciplinary training program of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) that aims to strengthen surveillance, preparedness, and response capabilities in the event of outbreaks.
