Award for the best medical case report of the year. Borstel doctoral student honored at the DGP annual conference in Leipzig

Johanna Eggeling, a doctoral student in the Clinical Infectious Diseases group at the Research Center Borstel, has received the award for the best medical case report at the 2025 annual conference of the German Society of Pneumology (DGP) in Leipzig. The award is given in recognition of an outstanding individual case presentation in the journal Pneumologie that combines medical findings with social relevance.

The award-winning article documents the dramatic course of the illness of a 43-year-old quarry worker who developed severe silicosis – a silica induced interstitial lung diseases - with complications such as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and silico-aspergillosis as a result of years of exposure to quartz fine dust. Despite regular occupational health checks, the disease ultimately led to a pneumonectomy (removal of a lung) and the need for a lung transplant.

With a high degree of professional precision and an eye for the human condition, Ms Eggeling and her co-authors highlight the deficits in the occupational health protection system and draw attention to the urgent need for preventive measures. The case study provides an example of how early occupational reorientation and consistent risk avoidance could prevent serious illnesses.
