European Advanced Course in Clinical Tuberculosis 2025 convenes global experts in Borstel Borstel, Germany

The European Advanced Course in Clinical Tuberculosis (EACCTB) 2025 concluded successfully this week, bringing together 120 clinicians, scientists, and public health professionals from 13 countries at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center. This premier 3-day event provided a comprehensive update on the clinical management and research developments in tuberculosis (TB), a disease that continues to challenge global health systems.

Jointly organized by four European non-governmental organizations in the field of  tuberculosis TBnet (Germany), KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation (The Netherlands), the Finnish Lung Health Association (FILHA), and Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) —with support from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF)—the course featured internationally recognized experts presenting the latest advances in TB epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment, and prevention.

This year´s EACCTB Visiting Professor was Prof. Alice Zwerling (University of Ottawa) who delivered a keynote lecture on the cost-effectiveness of molecular drug resistance testing.  She also held a dedicated satellite workshop for fellows on healthcare economics in tuberculosis.

Apart from updates on recent developments in different fields of tuberculosis like the epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment the EACCTB also introduced a “TB Science Slam,” giving early-career scientists a platform to present innovative research in rapid-fire sessions. Topics such as TB and migration, post-TB lung disease, nutrition and mycobacterial disease, sparked interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. Interactive case reports provided an opportunity for everyone to participate with suggestions for the management of difficult to treat patients.

Professor Christoph Lange, medical Director of the Research Center Borstel, emphasized the importance of global knowledge exchange in advancing TB care and research: “EACCTB 2025 reflects the shared commitment of international partners to reduce the burden of TB worldwide.”
