Humanitarian Commitment for People in Ukraine
This week, the eighth shipment of essential medicines and medical instruments from Borstel set off for Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war, the FZB, together with the Rotary Clubs of Bargteheide and Bad Oldesloe, has been able to deliver aid worth well over €100,000 to Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine.
For 1325 days, Ukraine has been suffering under the unlawful siege by the Russian Federation. The situation in Kharkiv is particularly dramatic. The country’s second-largest city, with a population comparable to Hamburg and located only 50 kilometers from the Russian border, is exposed to daily bomb and drone attacks. Time and again, there are outages of electricity, water, and heating supply.
The Research Center Borstel (FZB), Leibniz Lung Center, has maintained a close partnership with V. N. Karazin University in Kharkiv for many years. From this collaboration, a sustainable support for the tuberculosis hospital in the city has also developed. Together with the Rotary Clubs of Bargteheide and Bad Oldesloe, aid deliveries worth well over 100,000 euros have already been sent to Kharkiv.
Now, the 8th delivery of life-saving medicines and medical instruments has been dispatched to Kharkiv.
“Especially under the extremely difficult conditions on site, this assistance is of inestimable value – both for medical care and for the people who depend on it,” emphasizes Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director at FZB.
The situation of the people in the tuberculosis hospital in Kharkiv will also be the subject of a public lecture by Dr. Olha Konstantynovska, as part of a lecture series of the Leibniz Association on November 5, 2025, in Borstel.
