Excellence in Research Award for Professor Anna-Maria Mandalakas
Professor Anna Maria Mandalakas will be honoured with the Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. Excellence in Research Award 2025 on June 25. The award is presented annually to faculty members who have made the most significant scientific contribution to clinical or biomedical research at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas, one of the largest biomedical research institutions in the United States, over the past three years.
Professor Mandalakas is Director of the Department of Global Health at BCM and Texas Childrens' Hospital. She is a visiting professor in the Clinical Infectiology Group at the Research Centre Borstel, Leibniz Lung Centre, and holds a prestigious ‘Leibniz Chair’, an award from the Leibniz Association for individuals of high international standing who have made a long-term contribution to a Leibniz Institute. ‘Leibniz Chairs are an expression of a particularly close relationship between an international researcher and a Leibniz institution, which is particularly true of Professor Mandalakas.
‘Professor Mandalakas is a world-leading scientist in the field of paediatric tuberculosis research,’ says Professor Christoph Lange, Medical Director of the Research Centre Borstel and Head of the Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Group. ‘She is an outstanding scientist and mentor, with very important contributions to improving the diagnosis of tuberculosis in children in resource-poor settings. We are very proud that Professor Mandalakas is also a member of our group at Borstel. This award in recognition of her work is well deserved,’ says Lange.
