Focus on the lungs
We are the lung research center of the Leibniz Association.
Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).

Chronic lung diseases
The program area is dedicated to research into asthma, COPD and allergies, as these are among the most common chronic diseases and therefore cause an enormous burden for both patients and healthcare systems.
Priority Research Area

Infections
The Infections program area is dedicated to researching and combating bacterial infectious diseases of the lung with a focus on tuberculosis.
The aim is to improve the control and treatment of this disease.

    11th TBnet Academy: Young researchers from all over Europe meet in Tirana, Albania

    From 18 to 21 May 2025, the 11th TBnet Academy took place in Tirana, the capital of Albania. The prestigious event is organised by TBnet (www.tbnet.eu) - one of the largest research networks in the field of tuberculosis (TB) worldwide.     ‘Tuberculosis research on the run": FZB Team at the ’Run between the seas’.

    On Saturday, 24 May 2025, the Research Centre Borstel (FZB) once again took on the sporting challenge of the ‘Run between the Seas’. In the relay race from Husum on the North Sea to Damp on the Baltic Sea, the FZB team covered the 92.2-kilometre route in a total time of 7 hours, 53 minutes and 14 seconds - achieving an outstanding 124th place out of a total of 607 relay teams.
