Focus on the lungs
We are the lung research center of the Leibniz Association.
Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).

Chronic lung diseases
The program area is dedicated to research into asthma, COPD and allergies, as these are among the most common chronic diseases and therefore cause an enormous burden for both patients and healthcare systems.
Priority Research Area

Infections
The Infections program area is dedicated to researching and combating bacterial infectious diseases of the lung with a focus on tuberculosis.
The aim is to improve the control and treatment of this disease.

This area combines overarching research units that are essential for research at the FZB and represent an important link between the subject areas.

    The Next Step Towards Personalized Medicine: Medical Device Study on Computer-Assisted Personalized Therapy for COPD Launches at the FZB

    With the enrollment of the first patient, the PerMed-COPD study has now officially started at the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center.

    On Tour: Finanzministerin Dr. Silke Schneider zu Gast am FZB

    Am 18. August 2025 besuchte die Finanzministerin des Landes Schleswig-Holstein, Dr. Silke Schneider, das Forschungszentrum Borstel, Leibniz Lungenzentrum. Begleitet von Claudia Prehn und Jannah Linz aus dem Finanzministerium informierte sie sich im Rahmen ihrer Sommertour über die aktuellen Forschungsprojekte und erhielt Einblicke in die fortlaufende Modernisierung und Weiterentwicklung der Forschungsinfrastruktur auf dem Borsteler Campus.

    Dr. Nicolas Gisch hat am 15. Juli die Antrittsvorlesung im Rahmen seiner Habilitation an der Universität zu Lübeck im Fachgebiet Biochemie gehalten. Der Titel der Vorlesung: "Virulenzfaktoren oder doch nur Dekoration? Die biologische Relevanz von Lipoteichonsäuren und Lipoglykanen Gram-positiver Bakterien"
