Successful 2nd Edition of the “Bacterial Genome Sequencing Pan-European Network Conference” in Engelberg, Switzerland

From March 13th to 16th, 2025, leading scientists, medical microbiologists, and molecular biologists, and promising PhD students convened in Engelberg, Switzerland, for the 2nd edition of the “Bacterial Genome Sequencing Pan-European Network Conference”. Following the remarkable success of its inaugural event, this conference brought together international experts to discuss pivotal topics around Pathogen Genome Sequencing, its clinical and public health applications in molecular epidemiology and pathogen surveillance, and strategies to implement and enhance efficiency studies within hospitals and national healthcare systems.

The conference featured in-depth discussions and lectures on subjects such as surveillance strategies, antimicrobial resistance, long-read sequencing, advanced analytics including machine learning, and the translation of sequencing data into actionable public health policies. A focal point was the identification and implementation of essential quality control measures and standardization processes necessary for the routine implementation of genomic sequencing into clinical diagnostics and epidemiological surveillance.

Eight PhD students from across Europe presented their cutting-edge research, providing insights into novel approaches such as the genomic characterization of infectious agents, metagenomics, outbreak detection algorithms, and exploring the genomic plasticity of pathogens.

Organized jointly by the University of Zurich (Switzerland), Genomic Medicine Sweden & Örebro University Hospital (Sweden), Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (Germany), Akershus University Hospital (Norway), and the University of St. Andrews (UK), the event fostered interdisciplinary collaboration and active discussion among participants.

Given the successful discussions and positive feedback from attendees, planning is already underway for the third edition of the conference, aiming to build upon the achievements of the first two meetings. The organizers intend to establish this event as an annual tradition, eventually evolving into a dedicated Winter School focusing on bacterial genomic sequencing.
